Alex Otieno, MPH
Alex Otieno is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Arcadia University where he teaches undergraduate courses in sociology and anthropology as well as graduate courses in peace and conflict resolution. His research explores the intersections of governance and human security, human rights practice, and critical and transformative peace and human rights pedagogy. He is also an Associate Scholar at the Center for Global Health, University of Pennsylvania and serves on the board of directors of Prevention Point of Philadelphia. Before joining the faculty at Arcadia he worked with non-profit organizations responding to HIV/AIDS and homelessness in Philadelphia. He studied history and archaeology at the University of Nairobi and public health with a focus on health and human rights at Temple University. He has led and/or been part of several teaching and learning engagements in various countries in East, West and Southern Africa.

Alex and Beth share a background in community-based advocacy and policy change, working together in arenas of HIV/ADS, homelessness and reproductive justice. They have collaborated on conference papers about service learning, applied research methods, and service provision and presentations about global human rights advocacy. Alex recently served in an advisory capacity for a research project on harm reduction and opioid overdose in Philadelphia.
